BRIEF CAMP DESCRIPTION: An academic, enrichment, and basketball camp that aims to reduce the loss of learning over the summer break. Camp will be an adventure! We’ll escape a zombie apocalypse and decide on a new home planet for humans, all by using teamwork and problem solving skills. On Wednesday and Fridays, we will take campers on trips to the Delaware Contemporary, a working farm at Point Lookout, and the DuPont Environmental Education Center, as well as doing “citizen science” with our community service in the Brandywine Park. The later part of the day is always. . . basketball of course!
CAMP INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES OFFERED:
Basketball, Computers, Technology, Academics, and more. Critical Thinking Teamwork & Leadership Challenges, & Reading Intervention
CAMP LOCATION: We are located in a very green part of the city of Wilmington, just past Augustine Cut Off, between Concord Pike and N Broom St. We are directly across from Brandywine Park, and walking distance from the Brandywine Zoo and Warner Elementary School.
CAMP FACILITIES: We will have the whole campus of Salesianum, including a science lab for conducting messy experiments, a computer lab, and beautiful outside space. We are also right across from Brandywine Park, so we will go there for outside play.
CAMP PROGRAM INFO: This Summer Camp is an extension of the Dream Chasers Program, which is an academic and social development program for outstanding basketball players.
The Dream Chasers program has two basic goals:
1. Help our youth become caring, responsible and productive citizens.
2. Ensure that all members take an academic step beyond high school.
Dream Chasers works with its members academically, socially, and athletically to ensure these goals are met.
Ty Perry is the Executive Director and Head Coach of Dream Chasers. He played basketball for the University of Delaware, and then coached at college level, and has returned to his community to train the next generation. He will facilitate the afternoon training every day, and work with campers on leadership skills throughout the day.
Jessica Taylor is our Camp Coordinator. She has been teaching classes on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) for the nonprofit group Barrel of Makers and the Delaware Library System for over four years. She will be coordinating the exploratory, academic, reading, and community service portions of camp.
Rick Henry is our head instructor. Rick is a paraeducator, giving individualized attention to students who need extra assistance at Carrie Downie Elementary School. He also has years of experience as a summer camp counselor, including working as a Unit Leader at the YMCA last season, supervising other staff. He will be in charge of engaging the students in the curriculum, with the assistance of our junior counselor.
Kaelin Salley is our junior counselor. She attended this camp for 5 years before becoming a counselor. She recognizes this camp as contributing to her ability to a confident, genuine leader.
CAMP LEADERSHIP CIT/LIT PROGRAMS: Our staff will be trained by STRIVE: How you lead matters. Strive is a non-profit dedicated to spreading the power of character-driven leadership. They introduce student athletes and coaches to an intentional way of culture-building and leading – one rooted in self-awareness and empowered by a values-based, culture-driven community. Staff will pass on much of this training to campers.
CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: There are 3 half-scholarships available. You can apply for them on our website.
YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS: The Dream Chasers Program is an academic and social development program for outstanding basketball players that runs throughout the year. We run our own basketball league in Fall and in Winter, and run an AAU program in the Spring. Find out more at Our Camp Website Link: www.dreamchasersde.com.
