CAMP FACILITIES: Facilities and accommodations vary from trip to trip.
CAMP PROGRAM INFO: The Road Less Traveled as an organization was founded by Jim and Donna Stein in 1991, and has been successfully running safe, exciting, life-changing trips for teens ever since. Both Jim and Donna are still the current directors, and are integrally involved in every single aspect of the company. In the summer, they are on call 24/7, available both to parents as well as to our leaders in the field.
We are an ACA accredited organization with an impeccable track record. We believe in the process of accreditation. It allows us to compare our standards to other professionals in the industry. Our accreditation allows us to follow specific standards related to leader screening including use of application forms, reference checks, personal interviews, work history review, and background checks.
Many years ago, we were the first company serving young adults to require that all leaders have a Wilderness First Responder (WFR) medical certification. WFR training is far more advanced than standard first aid or wilderness first aid. In addition to this certification, we carry extensive first aid kits on all of our programs that include antibiotics and epinephrine. Contents, protocols, and standing orders are reviewed and updated every year by our Medical Director who is an MD.
Since our inception, RLT has been on the cutting edge of technological advances in communication. We began carrying Iridium satellite phones on all of our programs as soon as they were available. Today we continue to carry the latest in emergency communication systems. According to geographic location, programs are equipped with satellite phones, ground-to-air radios, and/or cellular phones providing the possibility of 24-hour access to medical help in case of emergency.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Envision Lead Grow is a Norfolk-based non-profit organization designed to introduce entrepreneurship to middle school girls through camps, mentoring, webinars and conferences. Through this repeated exposure and practice, girls develop entrepreneurial, STEAM-infused skills that allow them to contribute to and stimulate local economies.
Envision Lead Grow‘s mission is to increase the rate of entrepreneurship and break the cycle of poverty for 1,000 middle school girls in underserved communities in the U.S. by 2020. We are committed to helping them build their future through entrepreneurship by creating a community to support their success.
Angela D. Reddix is the President and CEO of ARDX, a multi-million-dollar healthcare management and IT consulting firm based in Norfolk, Virginia.
In 2016, Angela created the Envision Lead Grow movement, an online platform designed to support and encourage entrepreneurs at every stage of their journey.
Angela values education and is determined to share her knowledge with you.
Anyssa Reddix is a published author, speaker, and mentor to young girls. Sharing Angela’s passion for entrepreneurship, she jumped into Envision Lead Grow with both feet.
Anyssa is the Program Manager for Envision Lead Grow. She is in charge of organizing the stops along the 7-City Bus Tour. She has put together the team of counselors that will travel from city to city, she will be overseeing how they carry out the curriculum, “The 8 Seeds to Success in Business,” as well as organizing the logistics to get the bus on the road.
In 2016, the idea of the 7-City Bus Tour was just that. An idea. In 2017, thanks to the support, the time and the generosity of so many people, the first ever Envision Lead Grow cross-country tour was an overwhelming success. The national Envision Lead Grow 7-City Bus Tour kicked off the Envision Lead Grow entrepreneur program in the summer of 2017, making stops in 7 different cities (Atlanta, GA; Baltimore, MD; Memphis, TN; Norfolk, VA; Philadelphia, PA; Richmond, VA; and Greensboro, NC) across the United States. The ELG team shared its fast-paced, fun-filled curriculum, “The 8 Seeds to Success in Business”, written by Dr. Angela Reddix Founder and CEO herself, during a week-long summer camp in each city.
In 2018, ELG plans to expand its reach by serving two more regions- Bowling Green, KY; and Charleston, WV. Rather than touring each city like we did in 2017, in the summer of 2018, a total of 250 girls will travel from all branches to our home city of Norfolk to begin or expand their "8 Seeds to Success in Business" growth, together.
CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: ELG's Entrepreneurial Immersion Summer Camp is free of charge to our Girl Bosses and their family.
YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS: Envision Lead Grow is a Norfolk-based non-profit organization designed to introduce entrepreneurship to middle school girls through camps, mentoring, webinars and conferences. Through this repeated exposure and practice, girls develop entrepreneurial, STEAM-infused skills that allow them to contribute to and stimulate local economies.
The Envision Lead Grow Entrepreneurial Program consists of 4 parts:
Summer Immersion
9-Month Mentoring Support
All City, All Girls Webinars
The Entrepreneur Institute
Summer Immersion
The Envision Lead Grow program begins HERE, at one of our entrepreneurial immersion summer camps. Middle school girls from around your community will come together at a sleepaway camp to learn the building blocks of becoming an entrepreneur. Many of the girls start the session as strangers and will leave as great friends. Over the course of the summer program, participants will take part in exercises to help them think bigger, to apply entrepreneurial, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) infused skills to everyday life and to make better decisions. At the end of the summer immersion camp, these young women will leave with a solid business idea, a Passion Pitch they can use to sell their idea to others and confidence to take their company - and community - to the next level.
9-Month Mentoring Support
The Summer Immersion summer camp experience is just the beginning of the process for these budding Girl Bosses. We partner with adult mentors in each city where Envision Lead Grow sets up. After the summer camp is finished, female volunteers within the community step in to guide, to support and to be a sounding board for these young entrepreneurs. Over the course of the school year, the mentors check in with their young mentees to keep them on track.
All City, All Girls Webinars
It can be lonely to be in business for yourself, so Envision Lead Grow designed a way to ensure these young entrepreneurs never feel isolated. Aside from the check-ins with their mentors, ELG girls and mentors have the chance to meet each other through virtual meetings. Through these monthly video calls, the girls get to learn from ELG Founder Angela Reddix, as well as, each other. We believe that it is important to have a network of support through not only their ELG branch city mentor, but other ELG peers and mentors from all branches, too.
The Entrepreneur Institute
Envision Lead Grow will reward business owners who are committed to making their companies thrive. The Entrepreneur Institute is a multi-day field trip that will bring together the leaders of Fortune 500 companies, mentors and business educators. It’s an all-expenses paid trip for the girls who participate in the mentoring sessions, the All-City Webinars and the ELG business challenges. ELG Girl Bosses who are engaged in the program can earn a spot in The Entrepreneur Institute.
OTHER CAMP INFO: Girls will learn the "8 Seeds to Success in Business" curriculum, written and developed by Dr. Angela D. Reddix, Founder, President and CEO of ARDX, a mult-million dollar management and technology consulting company based in Norfolk, Virginia. This summer, the "8 Seeds" curriculum has been enhanced to include STEAM-infused exercises and activities. In addition to entrepreneurial, STEAM-infused practices, girls will have opportunity for choice time activities, such as yoga, drama (daily improvisation games), singing, dancing, creative writing, visual art, sports (volleyball, soccer, basketball, or tennis), swimming, blogging, cooking, and/or hiking. The girls will have the opportunity to explore Hampton Roads and experience some form of culture that is unique or unfamiliar to them. By the end of the week of camp, each girl will have a venture with a business plan ready to begin making sales, increased level of self-efficacy, greater self-control, conscientiousness, evaluation of short-term and long-term goals, intuition for decision making, and the ability to pitch her business venture successfully.

AFFILIATION(S): Christian. Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
BRIEF CAMP DESCRIPTION: Caroline Furnace Lutheran Camp & Retreat Center sits on 257 acres in the Shenandoah Valley. We offer eight weeks of Summer Camp to rising 1st through 12th graders. Campers experience daily worship and Bible study, plus a large range of activities. Campers can expect a week packed with fun! They'll get to swim, canoe, fish, creek walk, play small and large group games, challenge themselves on our low ropes course, hike, cook over a campfire, create crafts, learn archery, gain culinary skills, and explore the furnace ruins on camp property. Each week, Chaplains from supporting congregations join us in leading the campers in morning worship, Bible study, and campfire and evening devotion. Caroline Furnace combines small and large group -style camping in an outdoor, faith-filled setting, all to create an unforgettable summer camp experience for your camper.
SPECIAL NEEDS CAMPERS: Come experience camp together! Buddies in Christ camp is June 30-July 2 and July 2-4, and is designed for campers rising 1st to 12th grade who may not be able to come to camp on their own. We recognize that traditional summer camp has inherent demands that can make it difficult for campers with special needs - to include a busy schedule, high levels of activity, and uneven terrain. For Special Needs Camp, we work with each family to meet the needs of each individual.
Each camper comes for two nights with at least one parent. Buddies in Christ Camp is based in the Cabin Village. Group size is intentionally small (15 campers per session) to maximize individualized attention. Every camper has a high school or college aged "buddy" to guide them throughout the day. Parents are given optional free time on the second day of camp (July 1 or July 3, depending on session), and we will have parent activities and local business discounts available.
All camper activities are challenge by choice and include campfires, canoeing, fishing, swimming, yoga and play-based worship. Camp concludes with an optional family outing on the third day. The entire schedule is adapted to allow for longer transition times, flexibility, and more down time.
We feel it is important to discuss the realities of camp with each family, and what we can do to help each camper. The Cabin Village is wheelchair accessible, with two wheelchair accessible Cabins and accessibility to all common areas. There will most likely be two or three families per Cabin. The Cabins do not have air conditioning but we provide fans. The Cabin Village is wooded and nearly all activities will be accessed via trails. It can be humid and buggy during the day in the summer, with cool, dark nights.
CAMP INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES OFFERED:
Horses/Equestrian, Waterfront/Aquatics, Team Sports, Academics, Adventure, Travel, Wilderness/Nature, Theater, Music/Band, Fine Arts/Crafts, and more. Canoeing, Fishing, Archery, Hiking, Culinary, History, Caving, Rock Climbing,
CAMP LOCATION: Serving the community since 1957, we sit on 257 acres in the Shenandoah Valley and are situated northwest of Washington DC. We are supported by three local Synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) - Virginia, Metro DC, and West Virginia-Western Maryland. Our mission is to provide unforgettable faith, education and renewal experiences in God’s creation for all God’s people.

YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS: History: Over twenty-five years ago, Cynthia Donavin founded Classical Ballet Theatre (CBT), which today includes a classical ballet and contemporary dance training academy as well as performance companies. The not-for-profit organization has shared its love of the performing arts with thousands of students and patrons. It has presented beloved, classical ballets, such as "The Nutcracker," "Cinderella," "Sleeping Beauty," "Swan Lake," and "Coppelia" as well as original productions, such as "Tom Sawyer." It has maintained an outstanding faculty, and it has developed young artists who have been able to pursue careers in the theater at every level of excellence. In response to the demands of Fairfax County, CBT expanded its training programs, scholarships, and outreach efforts, which has resulted in its growth and establishment as a highly respected educational and performing arts organization in the Washington Metropolitan Area.
Mission: CBT provides education, performance, and outreach opportunities in the art of dance.
Education: CBT provides the highest caliber of classical ballet and contemporary dance training and coaching, affords classes to dancers of all ages and abilities, and prepares dancers for careers in the performing arts. The children's program emphasizes pre-professional achievement, with each instruction level crafted to provide comprehensive training in order to produce the high quality dancer for which CBT is known. In addition to academy classes, training includes master classes with industry leaders, Youth America Grand Prix coaching, dance conditioning specialties, summer intensives, and choreography camps. The adult program offers stretch classes, core conditioning, and classical training, and it often serves local and visiting professional dancers.
Performance: CBT provides exceptional classical ballet and contemporary dance performance opportunities, while offering professional quality productions to the community at affordable prices. Productions include beautiful choreography and some of the best, pre-professional talent in the area. CBS DC named CBT as one of the “best places to see ballet in the DC area.“
Outreach: CBT's extensive community outreach includes free performing arts enrichment programs for local schools, organizations, and underserved populations, as well as tribute performances that raise public awareness for worthy causes and/or honor members of the community. CBT also offers educational backstage tours, complimentary tickets to underserved populations, and performance discounts to scouts, military families, children, and seniors.
Goals: CBT has three main goals on which it consistently focuses:
To share its love of the performing arts by fulfilling the mission of the organization to the best of its ability and to incorporate ongoing program development and improvement to ensure the identification and fulfillment of student and community needs in innovative ways;
To instill core values of integrity, honesty, inclusion, respect, care, and excellence in its students; and
To serve as Northern Virginia's premier classical ballet and contemporary dance instruction academy and performance theatre and to be recognized nationally and internationally for developing future dancers who are mentally, physically, and emotionally capable of success.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: We only accept serious players with previous competitive soccer experience. Every year talented players attend our camps and challenge each other to the limit, growing in skill and experience. A number of our campers have experienced training trials with professional clubs in Holland. Our programs are designed to help players achieve their maximum potential through progressive exercises that are individually challenging, as well as appropriate to the age and ability of each player.
We fly in our coaches directly from the Netherlands. They are not merely coaches: they are also teachers. Many of our coaches have graduated from a four- year CIOS College. At the Central Institution of Sports, coaches not only received their coaching licenses from the global leader in soccer development: KNVB (Royal Dutch Soccer Federation) but also learn how to work with, encourage and incentivize young athletes. Every camp group will have the same Dutch coach for the entire week. Our coaches will get to know each of the players in their group and can coach them individually, assessing their needs and improving the specific areas best for them.

CAMP FACILITIES: Campers live in modern cozy dorm rooms (electricity, AC, and bathrooms – flush toilets & showers!) with 2-3 close-age peers. Each floor is unique, but all include common areas — inside with big comfy couches for relaxing, memorizing lines, and hanging out with your friends.
Staff live in private rooms on each floor so that they are nearby, attentive, and available, while still allowing campers an appropriate level of privacy.
Adventure surrounds us! There’s a river, running trails, a basketball court, a volleyball court, riverside firepits for s’mores, and a meadow for stargazing!
CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Traveling Players’ theatre camps & conservatories are small by design and awarded for excellence. The National Endowment for the Arts places Traveling Players in the top 25 in the nation for summer arts training.
Each cast only has 13-14 actors and 2-3 tech students, ensuring everyone receives exceptional, individualized training. The result? Real transformation, a tight & supportive ensemble, and a 70% retention rate.
Our students don’t just shine on stage, however. They shine off stage – with remarkable growth in independence, confidence, and close friendships that truly last – throughout middle and high school, and into college. That’s the Traveling Players difference. A kind, vibrant, joyful community where young artists are happy, can be themselves, and find “their people.”
Our holistic acting programs simultaneously ground kids in a connected community while expanding their understanding of the world. We give kids plenty of fresh air & exercise, complete with weekly campouts in tents & s’mores, and are completely unplugged! (We are phone free!)
“Patrick has gained incredible self-confidence, treasured friendships, and outstanding acting skills in his 4 years (and running) at Traveling Players. It’s a wonderfully supportive positive experience. The directors have an uncanny knack for knowing exactly what roles the students need for their growth and success.” – Erika, Patrick’s mother
Our auditions are first come, first decided. The sooner you audition/interview, the greater chance there is that space will still be available in the program you want. We’d love to welcome your child into our kind and vibrant community!
Founding Artistic Director Jeanne Harrison has taught for The Folger Shakespeare Library, Catholic University, University of Maryland-Baltimore County, Loyola University (MD), The Chapin School (NYC) and Interlochen Center for the Arts (MI), where she directed the Shakespeare program. At Counselor Institute we thoroughly review daily responsibilities, situations that may arise, expectations for staff conduct and emergency procedures. Additionally, by the time our campers arrive, our staff has reviewed all the information about their individually assigned campers as provided by their parents.
